I’m definitely no expert. I’m largely self-taught. I use a lot of shortcuts and cheats to accomplish my art.
Do lots of sketching, really rough lines attempting to capture the feel, motion, and proportions of humans. Then advance on to actual lineart. Attend local life-drawing studios. Usually for 15$ or so you get to have a live model pose so you can work on proportions and body lines and see how muscles move.
I use a Wacom Companion and Manga Studio Ex for the last year. Prior to that I used a really old wacom grapphire. So it depends on your budget. Most of my art was done with a 50$ tablet. The software is more of a “what works for you” thing. I’ve gone from Painter to Paint Tool Sai to Manga Studio. Each was okay for the time but then I’d find a new toy in another one.
