Cosmo felt his pants tighten again, arousal fed by Roddie’s teasing words. He scampered eagerly behind the man. It felt natural to walk a few steps behind him. Like a heeling dog or a dutiful slave.

Their footsteps echoed or creaked throughout the residence. Large paintings lined the walls alongside vases and statuary. There were some black and white photos as well. Each with a placard. Each with a story associated with the house or the bloodline.

He paused to look at one large painting of a trio of figures illuminated by a broad window opposite. The woman sat sternly upright. She wore a checked suit with elbow-length sleeves and long gloves, every bit the lady of the house. The man had an aura of command to him. A trimmed beard, dark suit and white waist coat. He wore an odd sigil ring next to his wedding band and with that hand he was making a strange gesture.

The third figure stood center but in the background…

“I’m sorry about the wait at the door. I didn’t hear your car on the drive.” Came Roddie’s distant voice.

Cosmo realized he’d lagged far behind, thoughts of the painting and the strange third figure gone. Jogging quickly to catch up, he replied, “No, I took the Metro North. Walked.”

Roddie raised an eyebrow. “You could have asked for a ride. I’m not so miserly that I can’t help with that.”

“You’d send your chauffeur around for lil’ ol’ me?” Cosmo winked coyly.

“I’d have rolled out the red carpet as well if it wasn’t a rats’ nest.”

“I’ll try not to hold that against you.” A wide grin had spread on Cosmo’s face. The man’s dry humor was too charming.

Roddie offered him a snifter of brandy and stared out at the view.

They’d stopped in an opulently decorated sunroom. Light streamed in through the large bay windows, affording them scenes of the gardens and grounds. Flower beds were a mish-mash of color and morning glory. The lawn was more like a savannah than a manicured playground for wealthy children.

And, running down the center of it was a large crack. A break in the earth like a knife’s cut. Cosmo recalled seeing similar erosion on the front of the house as well.

This place really was coming apart at the seams.
